Elk River sits where Glenrock, WY, is currently. Elk River is a half hour from Casper in one direction and a half hour from Boone (Douglas) in the other. Any other similarities to the town of Glenrock are unintentional.
Elk River has a police department with 1 or 2 detectives, quite a few random uniform officers, and a Chief of Police.
Elk River is nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
Elk River is the home to a river of the same name. It runs through the town and through the area that houses the Robbins' Nest Inn. (It can pretty much pop up anywhere the author needs it to.)
Elk River's citizens are everyday, hardworking people. Because it is the home of a cozy mystery, it does have its share of over-the-top characters, including A bumbling police officer, a fake French dude, a famous chef, and an amateur sleuth who's a bit real and a bit crazy too.
Elk River is a gateway to hunting, fishing, and hiking. The inn is in the perfect place to allow these things to become part of the story.
Elk River is the kind of small town where everyone knows the business of everyone else. And being a cozy mystery town, it's quadrupled. Enter the gossip girls (mid-series).
The major employers in Elk River aren't actually in Elk River. They are nearby oil rigs and ranches. (Well, except for Robbins' Nest Inn, it seems to have a million and one employees.)
Elk River becomes the murder capital of the Rocky Mountain states after Loralin opens her inn.
